Simple machines
Simple machines make work easier by reducing the amount of force needed to overcome resistance over a distance. The ideal mechanical advantage (IMA) of a simple machine is calculated by dividing the force required to overcome resistance over the distance of movement.
Examples of simple machines include inclined plane, wheel and axle, pulley, wedge and screw. Students will learn that the same equation for calculating work applies to simple and complex machines. Force is measured in units called newtons and distance is measured in meters. The product of these two quantities is energy, which has the same units as heat and work. A pulley is a device that makes it easier to move objects over a longer distance by multiplying the force applied to one end of the rope or string. You can find many types of pulleys around your house, such as a washing machine.
Components
The parts of a machine that are capable of bearing high loads and resisting torque or stress must be manufactured to precise specifications. This includes determining the materials that are most suitable and fabricating the components according to the load-bearing capacity of the device.
Mechanical components like springs, actuators and bearings are often small and insignificant, but they perform a vital function. Precision linear motion potentiometers from P3 America are used in a variety of equipment, including electric actuator drives and valve systems, industrial test and measurement equipment and manufacturing controls. Couplings are mechanical parts that connect two rotating in-line shafts and serve to transmit power. They can also act as fuses by breaking the connection between the driving and driven components to protect sensitive machinery in case the torque exceeds a predetermined threshold.
Joints
A mechanical joint allows movement for mechanical parts in machinery & equipment. Without a mechanical joint, the moving parts would seize up and become unusable. There are several types of mechanical joints. A knuckle joint is used to join rods that are exposed to tensile stress. It has three main components: an eye, a fork and a knuckle pin.
A rotary joint is used in machinery that requires the transfer of fluids or gases between stationary and rotating components. This type of joint prevents leaking and provides rotational flexibility to equipment. For example, hydraulic swivel joints are used in vehicles and construction machinery to facilitate fluid flow while allowing equipment arm rotation. They also reduce the stress on stationary equipment and component shafts.
Drives
Powering a variety of machines and equipment, mechanical drives are essential to the smooth running of production lines. However, if they break down or are damaged, it can cause the entire line to shut down until repairs can be made. Trained staff members who know how to troubleshoot these drives can keep production running smoothly.
Single-speed starting methods catapult motors into operation, subjecting them to high starting torque and current surges that often exceed their load current. Variable speed drives, on the other hand, ramp motors up to operating speeds gradually, which reduces mechanical and electrical stress and results in lower maintenance costs.
